Recorded at Dynkin’s home in about two weeks after Freidlin's coming to the US to take a professorship at the University of Maryland. Having been denied permission to leave the country for almost eight years, Freidlin was one of the first "refuseniks" to get an exit visa after the beginning of Gorbachev's "perestroika".  A significant part of the interview is devoted to the situation of the Moscow mathematics and to the experience of the refuseniks during this period.
